Earthquakes

Print Earthquake Brief PDF

Earthquakes strike suddenly. Advance planning can reduce the dangers of serious injury. Identify safe places in each room of your house in case of an earthquake. Remember to “DROP, COVER and HOLD” in the event of an earthquake. Get under a sturdy piece of furniture near an interior wall. Stay away from glass windows, mirrors or hanging pictures or furniture that contains glass, or large pieces of furniture that could fall over. If you are in a public building, get away from large shelves, and drop, cover and hold. If you are outside, move into an open area away from trees, signs, buildings and electrical wires and poles. If you are in your car, pull over and avoid overpasses, bridges, power lines and other hazards. After the earthquake, follow the instructions of authorities and do not drive unless necessary. Stay away from downed power lines. Prepare for aftershocks.
